A young girl, looking about nine or eleven, stood in the spotlight of the curtained stage and pressed the ridge of her wine glass to her delicate lips, eyes trained on the two entrances of the auditorium. It always delighted her to watch the new students file in...or at least it beat staring at her shoes for however long it took for the last one to arrive. There'd been two hundred accepted students this year, anyways.
Speaking of which, the silhouettes of the first few students appeared in the open doorway as Mr. Aeden Morr held the door open for them. All...four of them......five when something shadowy apparated into existence and slithered into a seat....then six when a tiny figure scurried into the room. That wasn't a lot.
She swallowed a groan and smiled for the barely illuminated faces that sat in the dark rows of seats.
It took two hours until the last student trotted through that opening. The girl took a deep breath:
"Hello, hello, hello, new faces, and welcome the Academy Celeste!"
"You may call me Elanor. I am the headmaster of this school and you may seek me in my office--it's a small little crook at the center of the garden maze--if you have any problems."
"As I'm sure you've read, this is like any other school you've been to before: you'll be learning valuable knowledge to carry with you your entire life, both logical and metaphysical, and creating relationships that span your entire lives. Remember that your teachers are here to help you and none of them will be angry at you for asking questions, though they do ask that you conduct yourselves in a responsible and mature way. "
"Unlike most schools, however, we also specialize in one very specific field...as I'm sure you all know, you're a group of very gifted children. There are classes that are open to you to hone your abilities and better yourself, whether or not you wish to make your time in them worth your while is up to you."
"Lunch begins at nine and ends at ten. First year students are required to stay in their dorms until seven, though second and third years may come out at six, and fourth and fifth at four. Your time between then and breakfast is your own, though if you need academic help it is advised that you use those hours to seek out your instructors."
"Morning classes begin at ten twenty-five: for first years, Period I and II last for an hour each, three for forty minutes before lunch break."
"Lunch lasts until two thirty. While breakfast must be eaten within the cafeteria walls, your lunch period is free for you roam the school grounds. Please be careful."
"Evening class schedules are flexible, and though four one hour classes are required, you have a two hours free between then and dinner, which is at eight thirty. You must eat dinner in the cafeteria."
"First year students are required to be in their dorms by nine and to bed by eleven. Second and third year students by nine and to bed by midnight. Fourth and fifth year students may wander the halls until midnight and have no required sleep schedule due to extensive academic pressure, though it is discouraged to stay up until the wee hours of the morning."
"Right then."
"In a few minutes, I'll be listing off the new students for each house." Elanor shuffled the papers on the podium in front of her, glancing at the long lists for the houses. "When you hear your name called, please come up and retrieve your house's emblem and sash, which you may wear wherever you wish if they are visible. Because there are so many of you I ask that you form an orderly line and move efficiently." She waved the sash of Ignis--a black bandanna-like piece of cloth with a fiery emblem--in demonstration.
"You will be sorted into either Ignis, Terra, Aether or Unda depending on the way you answered to your questions in your application packet and your description of your abilities--yes, those few questions about how you would react to so and so were important."
"Ignis is the house of fire and passion. Usually those with a strong, fiery, or warm attitude will be sorted into this house, though you may be sorted here if you're abilities require the setting to grow. This can be said of every house."
"Terra is the house of the earth and kindness. Usually the friendliest, most easygoing, and sensible will be sorted into this house."
"Aether is the house of air and detachment. Usually intelligent, collected, progressive individuals are sorted into this house."
"Unda is the final house and the house of water and rejuvenation. Calm souls with a duality of wisdom and innocence are common there."
"Now that that's out of the way, on with the sorting!"
200 names are quite a few, but you'd be surprised.
Surprised both at how quickly Elanor read off each name and how quickly each student stood up and made their way to the stage to retrieve their house's badge and sash.
Ignis was called first. Among the names? Arthur Mizugi, Cadence Geneva, and Minerva Jane.
Following suit was Terra with students such as Remington Viper and Finnegan...the Wraith.
Thomas O'Brien and Leland Albrecht were sorted into Aether, among many others.
Elsha the Asrai Fairy and Kaitlinn Crewe were sorted into Unda.
"Ah, now, are there any questions?" Elanor took a deep breath and sighed, her throat feeling raw.
